Route:
- Start up the lane, up the hill, for a short distance.
- Continue climbing to the summit of Pen y Fan
- As you descend down the other side, the path splits. Keep to the top path. It’s the better one.
- The wooded path as it descends into Cwm yr Eglwys is one of the prettiest sections of the entire Coast Path
- It is possible to avoid the hill, you can take the wheelchair & pushchair accessible path along the valley, behind the pub.
- From Cwm yr Eglwys, walk up the road to a house on the left. The Coast Path resumes behind it.
- Pass two little secret beaches before you approach Newport estuary. After you pass a boat house, the path becomes a properly surfaced path.
- Pass a few houses and, at low tide, drop down to the beach and walk over the rocks.
- An alternative path needs to be followed if the tide is in
- An unusual slate causeway brings you on to The Parrog
- Keep on alongside the margins of the estuary until you reach the bridge.
- A little way inland along the road brings you to Careg Coetan, an exposed burial chamber.
- Retrace your steps back along the estuary.
- Take the second lane on the left into the village centre.
- To continue to Carningli, walk up Market Street towards what’s left of the castle.
- Carry on up Mill Lane to the right of the castle.
- Keep going in as straight a line as you can.
- If in doubt, follow the acorn symbols that indicate where the route goes
