Narberth

Narberth

The little town of Narberth has grown over the last 10 years to become the arts and crafts capital of Pembrokeshire and a very ‘happening’ place to be. Narberth had become a bit of a rural backwater but has weathered the storm and is now going from strength to strength.

The shops are all very individual and sell some exquisite items ranging from fine art to fine food.

Accommodation in Narberth is limited. There is a good hotel, The Plas Hyfryd hotel and there are one or two B&B’s and guesthouses in the vicinity such as at Robeston Wathen and Clunderwen. There are camping, camp sites or touring caravan sites around Narberth or in Clunderwen. There are also several holiday parks here where you can rent a self catering static caravan or chalet. The new Bluestone Holiday Village alongside the A4075, three miles west of Narberth, will open in 2008. There are occasional self catering cottages in the area.   A long distance footpath called The Landsker Borderlands Trail circumnavigates Narberth. There are several good pubs, café’s and restaurants as well as one of the best entertainment venues in west Wales, The Queens Hall.

In the middle of the High Street in Narberth is the Old Town Hall, an imposing structure with a double stairway leading up to the entrance. Surrounding the Old Town Hall are some fine old buildings, many of which now house interesting and unusual shops.

Narberth Castle

Narberth castle is a rectangular castle with towers on each corner but, unfortunately, not much remains today. The most fascinating thing about Narberth is the legends that are attached to it. The castle’s exact origin lies back in the mists of time but it is believed the site may once have been occupied by a palace spoken of in the Mabinogion, a collection of ancient legends and myths. It was supposedly the home of Pwyll, Prince of
